8 Amazing Tips to Avoid Looking Costumey

All of us have those fortuitous days when things don’t fall in place as planned, but here are some amazing tips to avoid costumey look when wearing retro inspired or women’s vintage clothing.

First, decide if you want to mix everyday clothing with vintage or adapt authentic vintage style (from head-to-toe retro look). These are the top two vintage styles you might have seen around and there is no right or wrong, it’s completely up to you what look you want to adapt.

Let’s take a look at the tips:

1. Dress according to your personality not for the reason you think its right

Look at the ways you have dressed previously and identify your favourite looks. If your past dressing sense had a general feel to it, there are chances that you’ll find similar in vintage fashion. Whether you are a girly girl, a tomboy, practical & sensible, Avante Garde artist or a career woman, irrespective of your style there is an equivalent vintage for you. 50’s women didn’t all wear poodle skirts, 30’s women didn’t all wear bias-cut gowns, and 20’s women didn’t all wear fringe as there were several different styles in every single decade. So go explore around online for vintage womens clothing and if anything grabs your attention instantly like something you would put on in real life, add it to your closet.

2. Say no to nude stockings with darker seams

There is a reason you find them at a bit racy lingerie shops. Yes, they occasionally do wear them, however if you must wear stockings look for nude ones with nude seams. You don’t want to show to the world that you’re wearing seamed stockings, as they are different in tone. There must be a kind of overall beauty in your look and maybe people would not even notice you are wearing seamed stockings if they are nude on nude, though it will just look right. Beyond everything you want to create a look in totality, not break up the eye to a bunch of randomly “correct” details.

3. Choose a statement-piece

Things that keep you from looking costumey are selecting one statement-piece, maybe 2 but definitely not more than 3. For example crazy brooch and hat will work. In case of any doubt, keep it simple.

4. Make it endurable

How do you feel when you put on your outfit? Does it make you feel yourself, or does it make you feel you are charading someone else? Do you feel confident or get self conscious? Even if you are thinking about a single piece of your outfit more than enjoying the company of your friends then it’s time to re think about that choice. Sometimes it is as simple as fixing a hat in place with a pin, or adding heel grips or insoles to a shoe or getting a lipstick that doesn’t spread all over the face when you eat. Your style must appear conscious yet effortless, and part of that is finding items that fit in with you & your lifestyle.

5. Flattering hairstyles

One that works for the shape of your face and you is good to go with. It’s okay to try variations and do over and over on that hairstyle, if it works. Everyone doesn’t need to have perfectly polished rolls to get vintage look. And if you have a flat spot, simply add a hair ornament, hair flower or hat. Everyone will think you did it intentionally.

6. Go easy with makeup

Some women can pull-off the pin-up style and super dramatic makeup while some can’t. For those who cannot, must opt for old standby-either simple lips and bold eyes or simple eyes and red lips. You don’t need foundation, press-powder, concealer, unless you normally do it. If you are not comfortable with red lip colour, that’s completely fine. There were a variety of pink, coral and reds that were worn through different winter vintage decade.

7. Cheer about your good points

We all fester about things we don’t like but instead of that why not turn that to something positive. What’s that you love about the way you look? Large dĂ©colletĂ©? Sport boat necks. Have a tiny waist? Highlight it! Got long legs? You can look elegant in knee-length skirts and trousers. Beautiful hair? Add accessories like flowers or head-bands to make everyone turn heads. Emphasize the points you like and underplay the ones you don’t like.

8. Feel confident

Once you have decided your look, feel confident about it. Don’t ado in every mirror.  Don’t imagine that people are staring at you. Simply enjoy your life and feel good & confident about your choice. Happiness and Confidence are contagious.
